Screens and Hinges | Your Laptop Repair
JOB · SERVICE / DISPLAYA display fault can sit in the panel, the cable that runs through the hinge, the connector on the board or the hinge assembly itself. The workshop confirms which before quoting, so you do not pay for a panel when the real problem is a cable.
Symptoms customers describe
- A split spreading from a pressure point, often after a knock to the lid.
- Lines, bands or a patch of dead pixels that never change.
- A picture that is dim but still faintly visible, pointing to the backlight.
- Colour shifts or ghosting that survive a restart.
- A picture that flickers when the lid is moved through a certain angle.
- A screen that only works when the lid is held just so.
- A hinge that has stiffened, grinds, or has cracked its mount in the lid.
- A lid that no longer stays where you put it.
What the workshop does
- Confirms the fault. The panel is driven directly where the machine allows it, so the display can be judged separately from the cable and connector.
- Checks the hinge and cable path. The lid is moved through its range while the picture is watched. A fault that moves with the lid points to the cable, not the panel.
- Quotes both possibilities where they overlap. If the picture is unstable and the hinge is stiff, you are told what each fix costs before either is chosen.
- Replaces or repairs. A panel is swapped, a cable is re-seated or replaced, and a cracked hinge mount is rebuilt or the hinge assembly is replaced.
- Tests the result. Brightness, colour, the full range of lid angles and the closing and opening motion are all checked before hand-back.
What it usually costs
| Work | Typical band | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Panel replacement | Mid range | Dominated by the part; labour is modest |
| Display cable | Lower range | Often cheaper than a panel and often the real fault |
| Hinge assembly, one side | Lower to mid range | Checked for lid damage at the mount |
| Hinge mounts and lid rebuild | Mid range | Quoted only after inspection |
Before you book
Shine a light at the panel at a shallow angle while the laptop is on. If you can see a faint image where the screen should be, the backlight path is likely at fault rather than the panel itself, and that is worth mentioning. If the picture changes as you move the lid, say so; it steers the workshop straight to the cable. If the lid has been dropped, mention that too, because a dropped lid often carries both a panel fault and a hinge fault at once.
Do not press on a cracked panel to see if it improves. That spreads the damage and can turn a single repair into a panel and a digitizer.

A word on aftermarket panels
Where an original panel is no longer available, a workshop may offer a compatible alternative. It will say so plainly in the estimate, along with any difference in finish or brightness, so the choice is yours. A good workshop does not present an alternative as an original, and a written estimate is where that distinction belongs.
